Oklahoma City photographer and Guild member Sue Ogrocki received the Beat of the Week from the Associated Press for her coverage of the tornado that wiped out the suburb of Moore, Okla.
Ogrocki rushed from the office as soon as the tornado warnings appeared, knowing that it would be too late if she arrived after the first funnel cloud hit.
She arrived before officials could down the scene of devastation to reporters. The EF5 tornado wiped out entire neighborhoods and reduced one elementary school to rubble.
Ogrocki called in details to writers and did reports for AP Radio. Her photograph of a woman carrying a child across a field stripped bare became the image of the storm.
For her work, Ogrocki won the $500 Beat of the Week prize.
