A technician and a photo editor in Los Angeles and a master control room operator in Washington have won the News Media Guild’s annual Patrick Sherlock Scholarships for members this year. All three will be giving the scholarships to relatives.

Tony Kee, a technician in Los Angeles with 25 years at AP, won one of the two $2,000 awards. It will go to his son, Aaron, who will start his senior year at California State University, Dominguez Hills, in the fall. Aaron, 20, is majoring in psychology, but his career goals include screenwriting, acting and possibly teaching or working with children.

The other $2,000 award went to Danny D’Amico, an operator who handles satellite and other feeds in the Washington, D.C., bureau. It will be used by his wife, Lyndi, 33, who is studying nursing at Frederick Community College and hopes eventually to become a physician’s assistant. She’s been a volunteer emergency medical technician for nearly two decades and works with Davita Dialysis, treating kidney failure patients.

The $1,000 wild-card scholarship, which can go to a member’s relative, friend or co-worker, was won by Pamela Hassell, an editor on the Los Angeles photo desk. She is giving it to her niece, Faith Hassell, 23, who is working on a master’s degree in professional studies in human resources management at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
