Geranios won for his story about the 20th anniversary of the standoff at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, where white supremacist Randy Weaver and his family held off federal agents for more than week before surrendering. Geranios traveled to Kalispell, Mont., to interview Weaver’s daughter, Sara.

He’s been a regular winner of the Pacific Northwest SPJ awards over the years, including two first-place honors in 2009.

Other Guild members honored in this year’s contest include: photographer Elaine Thompson, first place in feature photography and third place for her portfolio; photographer Ted Warren, second place in sports photography; and writer Donna Blankenship, third place in education reporting.

The 2013 awards were handed out May 18. Journalists in Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana were eligible to compete.
