AP writers, photogs win big in AP Sports Editors awards

Several AP writers and photographers won big awards at the AP Sports Editors winter meeting earlier this month and will be honored at the group’s June convention.

National writer Eddie Pells, an NMG member, won the Grimsley Award for outstanding body of work, as well as the best feature prize, for his story on equestrian rider Boyd Martin and his Olympic dreams. That story was part of his body of work, along with a takeout on NFL player Tim Tebow and a profile on Olympic track champion Usain Bolt.

Golf writer Doug Ferguson won story of the year honors, for his piece on Augusta National golf club allowing the first female members in its 81-year history, Condoleezza Rice and Darla Moore.

Sports writer Howard Fendrich shared the enterprise writing prize with national writers Martha Irvine and Nancy Armour. They wrote “The Hardest Hit,” about long-term effects of repeated concussions on NFL players, through the eyes of former Dallas Cowboy Tony Dorsett and others. Continue reading
