Scott Thurston, senior assistant sports editor for The Boston Globe, told The AP that Golen’s story “I Need to Run,” was “brilliant in its simplicity and has such profound meaning.”

Other Guild embers who won awards included: Eddie Pells, deadline writing; Tim Dahlberg, feature writing; and Janie McCauley for enterprise. Guild member Jae C. Hong won a photo award.

Golen’s body of work included stories on Derek Jeter and gambling. Tim O’Toole, assistant managing sports editor at USA Today, complimented Golen’s work for not being overwritten. The story written one year after the marathon attacks “could have turned maudlin, but the reporter avoided that,” he said.
