The News Media Guild has filed a grievance over the company’s failure to pay premium holiday pay to sports vertical employees who were off Christmas Day or New Year’s Day, then worked the next day.
Section 6 of the Holidays article states, “When Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on Sunday and are observed on Monday, any employee working on either the holiday or on the day observed as such shall be compensated at the holiday rate. However, when an employee works on both the actual and the legal holiday in either of those instances, he/she shall receive holiday premium compensation for only one day in each case.”
Union officials asked AP managers for information showing the contract term was met in January, when they learned an employee was told the company wouldn’t pay the holiday rate.
The union received documentation two months later indicating terms were not being met.
The grievance covers all similarly situated employees in the Sports vertical.
“We were surprised the problem was not resolved instantly when we lodged the request.” Guild President Martha Waggoner said. “We were left no choice but to file a grievance to protect the contract rights of all employees.”
Employees should contact their shop stewards, regional representatives or the Guild office at email@example.com if they have problems or questions concerning their rights under the contract.
