The News Media Guild met with the Associated Press on Friday to review the company’s contract with Liberty Mutual, which is AP’s third-party administrator for sick leave and leaves of absence.
The Guild wants to make sure that the terms of its contract with the AP are consistent with the terms of the contract the company has with Liberty Mutual. The AP is reviewing the Guild’s concerns with Liberty.
The union also is reviewing all sick leave claims that Liberty Mutual denied to ensure terms are being administered properly.
The Guild also advanced a new union security clause that would commit existing and new members to continued membership or, if they choose to leave the Guild, to fair share agency fees because the union is required to represent all Guild-covered employees, regardless of whether they’re members.
Bargaining resumes Tuesday.
Representing the Guild were: Tony Winton, Martha Waggoner, John Braunreiter, Don Ryan, Vin Cherwoo and administrator Kevin Keane.
Representing the AP were: Michelle Ehrlich, Kristin Gazlay, Sue Gilkey, Carole Feldman, Alison Quan, Hilda Auguste and attorney Steve Macri.
