Guild Scholarship Winners 2010

The News Media Guild is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Patrick J. Sherlock Scholarship awards. This year’s winners are Casey Detrow, Julie Mazziotta, and Emilie Benick. The awards are made each year in memory of Sherlock, a former president of the Wire Service Guild, the forerunner of the News Media Guild. The winners are chosen by lottery.  Join us in congratulating the winners!

Casey Detrow

Casey Detrow, daughter of BNC journalist Jon Belmont.
Casey is a majoring in anthropology at Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College. A speaker of five languages, she is shown here displaying some temporary hand tatoos she got while learning Punjabi on a State Department fellowship in India.

Julie Mazziotta

Julie Mazziotta, daughter of Washington reporter Donna Cassata
Julie Mazziotta is a sophomore at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She is pursuing her interest in journalism as the opinion editor at her college newspaper. She is planning to major in political science and has worked on registering voters in her congressional district. She also is a rower on the Bryn Mawr crew team.

Emilie Benick

Emilie Benick, granddaughter of Minnneapolis photographer Jim Mone.
Emilie will attend the University of Wisconsin and study Athletic Training. She hopes to work for a Minnesota team after graduation. She writes that her grandpa has the “coolest job” she knows.
