Guild, AP settle forced transfer case

Alex Brandon, Washington shop steward Larry Margasak and News Media Guild administrator Kevin Keane

The News Media Guild and AP have reached a settlement in the case involving Alex Brandon, the AP photographer based in Washington, D.C., who was forced to transfer about 10 months ago to Philadelphia. By June 1, he will return to Washington, D.C., where he will work for the Mid-Atlantic bureau. Those offices are in the same building as where he worked previously.

We reached the agreement Wednesday evening (April 25, 2012)  after starting an arbitration hearing that morning. We moved from arbitration to negotiating a settlement after opening arguments. Alex is excited about the new job, and the Guild is pleased with the settlement. Longtime WDC shop steward Larry Margasak, who has represented Alex from the start, was on hand to help.

The Guild will have more details later but wanted everyone to know that Alex is returning to his home, wife and three dogs on a full-time basis very soon. This settlement is great news for Alex personally and great news for our union.
