Little Rock photographer Danny Johnston retires after 3 decades with AP

Longtime Little Rock photographer Danny Johnston, who covered Bill Clinton from his days as Arkansas governor to his run for the White House, is retiring after more than three decades with the AP.

Johnston, also a longtime Guild member, began work as a stringer for AP in the early 1980s and was hired full-time in 1985. He was present when Clinton announced his bid for the White House and also photographed the president’s election night parties, along with the Whitewater trial in Little Rock.

Johnston shot too many Arkansas Razorbacks football games to count and also regularly traveled to Memphis, Tenn., to photograph Memphis Grizzlies NBA games. This year, he photographed Arkansas Derby winner American Pharoah at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs before the horse went on to win the Triple Crown.

Johnston plans to travel and continue freelance photography after he retires Aug. 31.
