News Media Guild members were among those attending last weekend’s gathering of the NewsGuild’s Midwest District Council in Chicago.
The meeting focused on possible fallout from a major case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court involving union fees. But attendees also heard of organizing successes in newspapers throughout the United States, including new drives at the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune.
The News Media Guild’s Jill Bleed and Martha Waggoner attended the two-day meeting, along with representatives from other NewsGuild locals based in the Midwest. The News Media Guild was praised for its recent recruiting successes at AP, where 40 new members have joined since last August.
