    CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a year of negotiations, the News Media Guild and the EFE News Service reached areement on a first contract for U.S. workers at the Madrid-based Spanish news agency. Members ratified the pact unanimously on Dec. 21.

    The three-year agreement is retroactive to Jan. 2006 and establishes basic contract protections familiar to AP and UPI members, such as job security and the right to have disputes heard by an impartial abitrator.

    NEW YORK, Dec. 13, 2006 -- The News Media Guild and The Associated Press reached agreement on a new travel and expense policy covering journalists, technicians, and other workers at the news cooperative.

    CORAL GABLES, Fla. June 27, 2006 – Negotiators for the News Media Guild reported progress in talks with the EFE News Service on Tuesday, as both sides focused on issues such as vacations, maternity leave, and other ‘time away from work’ provisions.

    The company appeared to move closer to the Guild’s fair positions on these issues, which currently deviate from city to city and are far less than the superior contract covering Spanish workers who do the same jobs.

    CORAL GABLES, Fla. April 5, 2006 – The News Media Guild pressed for fair holiday provisions today in talks with the EFE News Service, saying the company’s policy in New York and Washington should be extended to its Florida employees.

    Currently, Florida employees receive less holiday time than their northern counterparts, as well as less time than provided to the company’s Spanish expatriate employees.

    Coral Gables, Fla. March 8, 2006 – Negotiators for the News Media Guild demanded that the EFE News Service stop unjust discrimination in the workplace today, saying the company’s latest proposals only further widen the unfair gap between Spaniards and non-Spaniards at the agency.

    “There is an Iberian ceiling at EFE that relegates non-Spaniards to second-class status,” said Tony Winton, NMG president. “This flies in the face of the company’s own internal policies and must be corrected, he said.
