The Sector Elections and Referendum Committee of The Newspaper Guild has certified that Bernie Lunzer has been elected as the new president of The Newspaper Guild. He will be sworn in as president at the next Communications Workers of America convention taking place in June.
Lunzer defeated the incumbent president Linda Foley with 55.8 percent of the votes; 3,611 to 2,864.
The SERC also certified the election of Carol Rothman as secretary-treasurer. Rothman defeated her opponent, Scott Stephens, by receiving 60.9 percent of the votes cast; 3,834 to 2,460. Connie Knox defeated Lois Kirkup by receiving 62.2 percent of the votes; 3,868 to 2,347.
News Media Guild president Tony Winton lost his bid for the Region 2 Vice President seat. Shiela Lindsey won with 65 percent of the votes; 658 to 354. Winton continues to serve as the president of the New Media Guild.
The News Media Guild Executive Committee supported the Lunzer, Rothman and Knox candidacies claiming they were best suited to deal with industry changes and tough bargaining.
Winton said, “We supported Lunzer, Rothman and Knox because they had the best bargaining ideas and greater negotiating experience. We now have the best leadership possible as we near our bargaining with The Associated Press.”
The editorial and technology unit contracts expire on November 30.
